I really enjoy this series and have read them in order. This is book 4 and yes, while they easily stand alone, it's fun to see some of the characters develop when read in order. Evie is an American who married (for love) British nobility and then was left widowed. She has plenty of money and chooses to live in England, sometimes in London and sometimes on her estate with her mother in law, rather than return to America. She solves mysteries with the aid of her servants and her mysterious 'bodyguard' who was hired by her grandmother. I enjoyed this book less than the other three in the series and I'm not sure why-it just seemed rushed and to build on the last book in the series to understand the character relationships. In addition, nothing new was really revealed with the main characters and the set up was a non-starter. While Evie has three playwrights come to stay at her house, it was amusing but silly and added very little except disbelief that her servants would be allowed so much time to do nothing. A great series and I suggest reading them in order for a cozy mystery binge-maybe with more momentum I'd have enjoyed this one more. Still looking forward to more of Evie's adventures.
I "never" read "historical" books.... I've just never enjoyed them.... BUT that was before I met the lovely Evie Parker. She is so lively and alive that you're sure that this is just what you would do in those fun days of the 1920's if you had LOTS of money and enjoyed a bit of adventure. I read all of these books, every one was enough different that each one was enjoyable and I just couldn't wait to see what Evie and her friend Tom would get up to next.... Looking forward to more!
The mysterious death in her village of a very annoying London transplant has everyone wondering not just who did it, but also how the woman died. Evie has some delightful new people staying at Halton House and they decide to use the murder as inspiration for their play! Hilarity abounds as the playwrights use the mystery and the people in the village to form their play and Evie uses the play to sound out ideas about the murder.
I generally enjoy "period" and "clean" mysteries - Joan Smith, Georgette Heyer (especially her mid-century ones), MC Beaton's Edwardian series. The 1st two books in this series were enjoyable and I especially liked the characters of Evie and the mysterious Tom Winchester. Was looking forward to learning more about his background. In this 4th book in the series, Winchester rarely appears and to say he is a mere standby role is an understatement. We learned nothing about his past. I'm getting tired of the series and wouldn't dream of continuing if I was required to pay a cent. However, I'll continue so long as they are free on my Kindle in the hopes we learn more about Winchester and why Evie's grandmother hired him.
I like this series but it is very disconcerting to be reading merrily along and all of sudden have one of the main characters have a name change. What? Did I miss something? You go back a few paragraphs and realize no, it is the fault of an editor that missed a mistake of a name change in a major character. Just a little sloppy. It did not detract from the story, which unlike the first two in the series is a bit silly but very readable.
